No to SCA5!
SCA5, authored by Sen. Ed Hernandez, would allow public universities in California (such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCI, UCSD, etc.) to use race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin as a consideration for accepting students. One of the arguments from the proponents of SCA5 was that Asian students disproportionately dominate admissions at the UC’s most prestigious campuses and are enrolled in numbers far greater than their proportion of California’s population (e.g. In 2013, Asian achieved 36% of admissions in UC system vs. 14.9% of the CA population). Sen. Hernandez’s office assumed the bill would be needed to produce “well-trained, diverse workforce.”
However, SCA5 is openly and specifically racist. If passed, it would put one of the most significant restrictions on the freedom of education and equal competition; If passed, it would be one of the most racist bills introduced in a State legislature since the 1965 Civil Rights Act; If passed, it could open the door for using race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin as a consideration for hiring employees; If passed, it would strongly affect our COAA community, our families, and our children’s future. After the Senate vote, the SCA5 measure has been forwarded to the State Assembly for vote. The “Concerned Californians” have initiated a petition “Vote NO to SCA5” to the California State Assembly through https://www.change.org/petitions/california-state-assembly-vote-no-to-sca-5. We urge all COAA-SCC members, and through you, your families, your friends and your communities; urge all California residents (including other Asian ethnicities such as Korean, Indian, Japanese, etc.) to vote NO to SCA5.
Let’s join together to make our voice stronger in defending our equal rights in the beautiful multi-cultural Golden State.
How to make our voice heard:
1, Write letters to senators and urge them to vote no to SCA5. You can find a template for such emailshttp://www.mitbbs.com/article_t2/SanFrancisco/34108335.html
2, Sign the online petition: https://www.change.org/petitions/california-state-assembly-vote-no-to-sca-5
3, Write to the State Assembly representatives of their districts. The link below could help to find the representative by input the home address http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/
