A letter from the president

Dear COAA SCC members, family and friends,

The 2019-2020 COAA SCC Executive Committee (EC) has been elected and officially took office on August 10th, 2019. On behalf of the 2019-2020 COAA SCC EC members, I want to send a warm greeting to you all. Thank you all for your help and cooperation that made our COAA SCC activities successful during the last fiscal year (2018-2019) and I look forward to seeing you in our COAA SCC activities in the coming fiscal year (2019-2020). I also want to thank all 2018-2019 COAA SCC EC members, especially outgoing EC members Tangdong Qu (UCLA), Hongchen Qin (UCI), Ru Chen (UCLA), and Huilin Huang (UCLA), for their dedicated service and great achievements in the past year!

Officially established in January, 2008, COAA SCC is a non-profit organization focusing on enhancing the interactions and communications among Chinese- American atmospheric and oceanic scientists and their family and friends across the Southern California and the Southwestern US in general. There are now around 100 COAA SCC members consisting of professors, scientists and students from Caltech, CSULA, JPL, UA, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, SDSU, and USC. Our COAA SCC members are immersed in a rich academic and warm friendship environment that both challenge and nurture them. With common roots in China and many common research interests in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, the COAA SCC members appreciate the virtues of both Chinese and American cultures and have a strong need to promote friendship and scientific collaboration among themselves. The COAA SCC provides such an excellent platform.

Over the years, the COAA SCC has become a reputed, grass-root academic association recognized by Chinese-American scholars and scientific community at large. The success of COAA SCC represents our collective efforts. All COAA SCC EC members are volunteers who contribute their personal time to the COAA SCC operation and activities. Our senior members of professors and scientists are reaching out to share their valuable golden keys to success and to help the younger generation of scientists and students to succeed. Our junior members of scientists and students represent a hard-working and inspiring young generation actively engaging frontier scientific researches. The dedication in scientific excellence and friendship in scientific collaboration by COAA SCC members also provide a living model of professional image to our children who may become scientists and engineers in the future.

I encourage you to visit our website ( to learn more about COAA SCC and encourage more people to join us. We welcome any ideas and suggestions you may have for the future COAA SCC activities and how to improve COAA SCC.

Sincerely yours,

Baijun Tian
